‘Mortal Kombat’ and ‘Demon Slayer’ open above expectations in the box office
Does this weekend’s strong box office mean moviegoing is returning to some estimation of normal? With about 57% of theaters within the U. S. and Canada reopened for business (albeit at limited capacity), Warner Bros. ’ “ Mortal Kombat ” opened to a surprisingly solid $22. 5 million throughout 3, 073 locations, according to estimates from measurement firm Comscore.
It is the biggest opening weekend to have an R-rated movie since the coronavirus shutdown closed theaters more than a year ago and the second-largest pandemic-era opening weekend general, following the studio’s success along with “Godzilla vs . Kong” this particular month.
Depending on characters from the popular video game, “Mortal Kombat” is a restart of the ’90s film series and was released simultaneously within theaters and on HBO Utmost.
Internationally, the film earned $27. six million, for a global total of $50. one million. The film’s wedding reception was mixed, with a B-plus audience grade from CinemaScore and a 55% “rotten” ranking on review aggregation web site Rotten Tomatoes.
In second place, Funimation’s anime blockbuster “ Devil Slayer — Kimetsu simply no Yaiba — the Movie: Mugen Train ” premiered to $19. 5 mil on 1, 600 displays. A sequel to the cartoons television series, the film gained a rare 100% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now in its 4th weekend, “Godzilla vs . Kong” added $4. 2 mil for a domestic cumulative total of $86. 6 mil and a global cumulative overall of $406. 6 mil.
